The History of Amorgos Island
Amorgos Island's history is as fascinating as it is long. Evidence of the island's ancient past can be found throughout the island, including ancient ruins, rock carvings, and tombs.
In ancient times, Amorgos played an important role in the trade routes between Crete and the Cyclades, and the island was home to several thriving civilizations, including the Minoans. The island was also a center of worship for the goddess Demeter, the Greek goddess of agriculture, harvest, and fertility, and several important temples were dedicated to her on Amorgos.
During the Classical period, Amorgos was known for its thriving arts scene, with several important poets and artists hailing from the island. In the Middle Ages, Amorgos was ruled by various powers, including the Byzantine Empire, the Venetians, and the Ottoman Empire. The island played an important role in the struggle for Greek independence, with several key battles taking place on its shores.
Today, visitors to Amorgos Island can explore the island's rich history and culture through a variety of activities, including visiting ancient ruins, exploring traditional villages, and attending cultural events and festivals. The island is home to several important archaeological sites, including the ancient city of Minoa and the stunning Monastery of Hozoviotissa, which was built in the 11th century and is one of the most important religious sites in Greece. Visitors can also enjoy the island's beautiful beaches, stunning scenery, and delicious local cuisine.
It was an amazing journey filled with astrological insights and learning about myths that helped parallel my own traits and challenges. I really enjoyed the balance of reading and class work alongside excursions and relaxation. Greece was such a magical place and the perfect setting to absorb such knowledge!
